5 pages of cursive writing practice. One page for each day. The following day before going to school, I make him read a page.
With my initial instructions: Miguel, you read properly so I will not have you repeat from the start. Not the cartoon voice. And you have to pause when there's a comma, and stop when there's a period. Okay, Miggy?
"Yes, mommy."
"The space shuttle is NASA's space transportation system, designed to carry astronauts and cargo to and from Earth orbit. The first space shuttle flight took place in 1981. The space shuttle fleet is scheduled to be retired in 2010. When the shuttle program ends, the space shuttle will have been launched on about 130 missions."
He is used to the routine. Every morning if we still have time, I make him read a page or two of a book. I make sure that everyday we do something educational. And we never missed a single day. Even during vacation and holidays, we have "study time." We discuss the schedule and I make him write it. Of course at the end of study time, there should be a treat: GAME TIME!
Any time of the day and just about any place could be a learning experience for both of us. It could happen on the way to school, in the bathroom, while watching TV together, or any time I am with him. I don't waste any opportunity for him to learn. Educating this special child doesn't mean all books, videos, answering work sheets and those sorts of standard learning. Improvisation is the key. Parents and teachers have to be inventive and resourceful. Just look around you and you'll discover there are actually a lot of academic use in everything.

SM Art Gallery Photo Exhibit, 2014 Colors of A Spectrum Photography workshop
Proudly (and humbly), I present to you, my dear blog followers, these pictures taken this evening (Feb. 13, 2014) at the opening of COLORS OF A SPECTRUM PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP photo exhibit at the SM Art Gallery, lower basement of SM City Baguio.

Miggy's 4th Photography Workshop, Philippine Military Academy
Dear friends,
This is his 4th participation in the yearly photography workshop, COLORS OF A SPECTRUM, by the Autism Society of the Philippines, in partnership with Play and Say Therapy Center, Baguio Photographers Club, Colorworld, Mukha ng Baguio, SM Baguio, and of course, the Philippine Military Academy.
The Colors of A Spectrum Photo Exhibit will open on February 14, 2014 at the Lower Basement of SM Baguio.
Prepare to be surprised as you witness what the world really looks like through the eyes of these special people.
See you all there!
This last set of photos were taken during the PMA's generous offer for a tryout of their "supposedly restricted" training grounds. How sweet! How big a heart despite those broad shoulders, sturdy build, non-smiling faces (during drills, of course) but lots and lots of shiny white teeth and smiles, careful gentleness and genuine patience as they ushered these specials.
Hitting two birds in one stone? Nah!
1. A chance to be paired again with photographer/mentor "The Great LINO TABANGIN."
2. Another supplementary training in photography.
3. Miggy was able to overcome his fear of men in uniform.
4. And his fear of tanks. (And who's not afraid of tanks?! Hey, anybody?????!!)
To all PMAers, we salute you!
Hey, I almost forgot! This took place on January 26, 2014.
