Meticulous Play

Please take note of how tiny his little cutouts are. These are painstakingly stacked in every room of his playhouse. And notice his obsession on stickers.

With just one look, he would know if a thing is misplaced. This is why I have to ask his permission when I clean his playhouse.
Mommy: Miggy, do you want a clean playhouse?
Miggy: Yes.
Mommy: Can I clean your playhouse now?
Miggy: Yes.
Mommy: Okay. Mommy will now remove the furniture. Yes, Miggy?
Miggy: Yes, Mommy.

If he says no, I do not insist.
I know my son very well. It's a NO if he says no and a YES if he says yes. For him, there are no "in betweens". All black or white, and no grays.

Special Kids Video

After not watching this video collection for many years, I don't know what triggered his sudden gusto. A change of routine. His eyes have lately been glued to these two movies only, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Hop for nearly a month. Tonight, for 4 hours already, he has been watching Special Kids, reciting the video word-for-word with the narrator. Exactly the same pacing, intonation and accent. He still remembers every word. Ah! His autistic mind never ceases to amaze me.

The Special Kids Video teaches speech, vocabulary, spelling and a variety of skills.
Video Modelling Therapy is one of the most effective speech and skill-building strategies for children with developmental, cognitive and learning disabilities. Special Kids Video Collection includes the following:

Speech Session

Today's speech therapy session with Teacher Justin Palou went perfectly well despite the not-so-good, makes-you-feel-sick, wet-and-cold weather.

Here's what his therapist wrote on his notebook:

Good job with Miggy being more independent in tasks and with complying with verbal instructions.

1. Why questions using "because" and "so that":
    - scored 23/26 correct answers
    - Great job!

2.  Hypothetical events:
    - correct 27/28 times without cues

3.  Rhyming words (which is not his favorite):
    - able to make or think of words that rhyme with the given word when provided with cues

4. Narrating story based on sequenced pictures:
    - moderate cues with prompts for grammar and sentence length

Play Group for Social Skills Training

July 7, 2012

Here's Miggy being assessed by a SPED Specialist. My child needs 2 programs: school-based and home-based. He needs improvement in his social behavior and interaction. His impulsive behavior likewise needs to be addressed.
I have to set up and facilitate a play group at home: 4-5 regular kids, plus Miggy. This play group aims to teach him social skills, such as flexibility, taking turns, cooperation, sharing, initiating, and spontaneous play.
The same approach goes for his school-based program. Teacher Ricky will expertly provide instructions for the structured peer-mediated approach.
